Examples
Here are links to some illustrative examples using PHP, Java, Javascript, SVG and XML - we hope that you enjoy browsing them. You are free to adapt the examples for your own use, but an acknowledgement would be appreciated.
SlideshowThis is implemented using SMIL for visitors using the Internet Explorer web browser, and javascript for other web browsers such as Opera and Netscape (which do not support SMIL directly). SMIL is HTML-like language for describing audiovisual presentations, that can be used to create sophisticated slideshows and internet-based presentations. It allows for a range of time-based effects such as transition filters. For example, in a slideshow images can be made to fade in and out, or dissolve and re-form. As well as images, the presentation can include animations, audio and video.
Java ExamplesJava is a programming language that can be used to create small applications (known as "applets") which can be embedded in a web page. It can be employed in a huge variety of applications. These examples show some of the image-processing capabilities of Java, and also a simple card game. It must be said that these examples just scratch the surface of Java's capabilities. If you wish to be able to run Java applets or applications on your computer you will need the Java Run-time Environment, which is available free to download from Sun Java.
Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) ExamplesSVG is a relatively new and powerful open-source technology specifically designed for the creation of interactive graphics and animation for web pages. The examples shown include some animations, some fractal images created using SVG with javascript, and an interactive population chart application using Census data, implemented using SVG, javascript, PHP and a MYSQL database.
Troubleshooting
In order to view these pages your web browser needs to open a new window. Usually simply clicking on the link should be enough. If you find you are having problems and have a pop-up blocker you may need to disable this - or try this
- right-click on the link, then select "copy shortcut" ("copy link address" if you are using the Opera web browser) - this will copy the link into your clipboard
- open a new window or tab in your browser
- paste (Ctrl-V) the link into the address bar of the new window or tab of your web browser
